The world is facing a food crisis

The world faces worst food crisis for 50 years, UN Secretary General António Guterres warns, reports The Guardian.

Antonio Guterres, the UN secretary general urged governments around the world to take urgent measures to prevent the harmful effects of the coronavirus pandemic and ensure food security.

“Unless immediate actions are taken, global food emergency is more likely to occur, the consequences of which will affect hundreds of millions of children and adults," the UN head said.

He also added that about 50 million people risk falling into “extreme poverty” this year owing to the pandemic and will not be able to buy basic food for themselves.
