June pork muscle cut exports were up 7,100 mt from last year but were the lowest since last September at 177,732 mt. Exports were higher to China/HK (+35,500 mt), ASEAN (+1,100 mt), Russia region (+410 mt), Taiwan (+180 mt), Canada (+170 mt), Caribbean + DR (+130 mt), and Central America (+70 mt). Exports were lower to Mexico (-9,000 mt), South America (8,200 mt), Japan (-7,040 mt), Australia/New Zealand (-3,900 mt), Korea (-2,900 mt), and the EU (-90 mt). Exports to China (59,955 mt, +142%) were the lowest since last November, and exports to Hong Kong (1,458 mt, +28%) were the lowest since last August. Exports to Mexico (40,935 mt, -18%) were up 29% from May and were the highest since March. Exports to Canada (15,342 mt, +1%) were up 15% from May and were also the highest since March. Exports to Japan (23,532 mt, -23%) and Korea (10,542 mt, -22%) slowed from May to June, and exports also slowed from May to June for Oceania: Australia (4,341 mt, -47%) and New Zealand (722 mt, -10%) and South America: Colombia (2,676 mt, -62%) and Chile (697 mt, -84%). Exports to the Philippines (3,036 mt, +15%) were the highest since last September, and exports to Vietnam (966 mt, +1,078%) maintained a strong pace (but were down from 1,263 mt in May). Exports to Honduras (2,865 mt, +34%) were higher year-over-year, but exports were lower to Panama (1,155 mt, -1%) and Guatemala (1,030 mt, -16%). Exports to the Dominican Republic (2,635 mt, +16%) slowed to the lowest level since last December but remained higher year-over-year. Exports to Taiwan (1,396 mt, +15%) were higher year-over-year. Exports were the highest since 2013 for both Albania (665 mt, up significantly from 18 mt last year) and Ukraine (383 mt, up from 0 mt last year).

June pork variety meat exports were down 16% from May and down 30% or down 12,800 mt from last year to 29,449 mt. Exports were higher to the Caribbean + DR (+90 mt) and Taiwan (+30 mt) but were lower to China/HK (8,000 mt), Mexico (-2,200 mt), Japan (-800 mt), Canada (-610 mt), Korea (-500 mt), ASEAN (-290 mt), Central America (-260 mt), and South America (-170 mt). Exports to China (15,409 mt, -9%) were the lowest since last May, and exports to Hong Kong (1,061 mt, -86%) were the lowest since 2007. Exports to Mexico (7,723 mt, -22%) were the highest since March, but exports to Canada (1,276 mt, -32%) slowed from May to June. Exports to the Philippines (672 mt, -36%) and Vietnam (216 mt, +38%) both rebounded from May to June. Exports to Colombia (612 mt, +283%) were the highest since 2016, but exports to Chile (216 mt, -73%) were lower. Exports were also lower to Korea (527 mt, -48%), Japan (378 mt, -68%), Guatemala (330 mt, -10%), and Taiwan (258 mt, +11%).

Through June, U.S. pork and variety meat exports were up 305,000 mt from last year or up 25% driven by growth to China/HK (+380,100 mt). Year-to-date pork and variety meat exports were also higher to ASEAN (+3,400 mt), Japan (+2,500 mt), Caribbean + DR (+1,000 mt), Central America (+680 mt) Africa (+280 mt), and the Russia region (+350 mt), while exports to Canada were steady. Exports were lower to Korea (-25,900 mt), South America (-25,000 mt), Mexico (-20,300 mt), Australia/NZ (-9,400 mt), Taiwan (-2,750 mt), and the EU (-590 mt).

June pork exports accounted for 22.2% of pork production and 24.0% when including variety meats as compared to 24.0% and 27.8% for June 2019. January – June pork exports accounted for 28.6% of pork production and 31.5% when adding variety meats, up from 22.4% and 25.8% for January – June 2019.

June pork export value per head averaged $46.19/head, down $10.79/head or -19% from $56.99/head last June (and down from the record highs of $72.55/head and $72.23/head in April and May). For January – June, pork export value per head slaughtered averaged $63.61/head, up $13.56/head or +27% from $50.05/ head last year.
