In July, pork muscle cut exports slowed to 172,717 mt, the lowest since September 2019. August pork muscle cut exports were up 4% from July to 179,361 mt, down 0.6% or -1,000 mt from last year but up slightly (+640 mt) from 2019. August pork muscle cut exports were higher year-over-year to Mexico (+22,500 mt), South America (+3,550 mt), Central America (+2,800 mt), Japan (+2,500 mt), Caribbean + DR (+2,400 mt), Korea (+750 mt), and EU 27 + UK (+170 mt). Exports were lower year-over-year to China/HK (-20,300 mt), ASEAN (-6,100 mt), Canada (-4,000 mt), Australia/NZ (-2,700 mt), and Taiwan (-2,500 mt). Exports to Mexico of 68,949 mt were record large, up 48% from last year and up 34% from 2019, surpassing the prior record of 66,693 mt in December 2016. Japan was the second largest volume destination in August at 32,224 mt, up 9%. Combined exports to China/HK totaled 19,475 mt, down 51% from last year, with exports to China (18,662 mt, -52%) slowing to the lowest level since April 2019 and exports to Hong Kong (813 mt, -35%) remaining sluggish. Exports were lower to Canada (15,065 mt, -21%), and exports to Korea (9,404 mt, +9%) slowed to the lowest level since last September. Exports to Colombia (8,306 mt, +94%) were the highest since March, and exports were higher to Peru (204 mt, +44%), while exports to Chile (1,577 mt, -24%) slowed to the lowest level since last June. Exports remained strong to Central America: Dominican Republic (4,858 mt, +95% and the fifth highest monthly volume), Honduras (4,015 mt, +14% and the fourth highest volume), Guatemala (2,353 mt, +99% and the third highest monthly volume), Panama (1,240 mt, +31%), Nicaragua (742 mt, +83%), Costa Rica (720 mt, +119%), and El Salvador (693 mt, +34%). Exports slowed to the lowest level since 2017 to Australia (3,594 mt, -40%) and to the lowest level since 2019 to New Zealand (652 mt, -32%) in August. Exports to the Philippines (2,795 mt, -36%) were the lowest since November and to Vietnam (74 mt, -98%) were the lowest since 2017, while exports were higher to Singapore (221 mt, +38%). Exports were lower to the Bahamas (366 mt, -4%) and Trinidad and Tobago (205 mt, -31%).

August pork variety meat exports totaled 46,461 mt, up 24% or +8,900 mt from last year and up 8% (+3,600 mt) from 2019.
Compared to last year, August variety meat exports were higher to China/HK (+7,250 mt), Mexico (+3,400 mt), Korea (+130 mt), Japan (+60 mt), and Taiwan (+50 mt), while exports were lower year-over-year to South America (-830 mt), ASEAN (-480 mt), Canada (-340 mt), Caribbean + DR (-190 mt), and Central America (-120 mt). Combined exports to China/HK totaled 29,434 mt, up 33% from last year as exports remained elevated to China (29,309 mt, +37% and the fifth highest monthly volume), while exports remained minimal to Hong Kong (125 mt, -84%).

Exports to Mexico (11,830 mt, +40%) were the highest since January 2020. Exports to the Philippines (1,185 mt, -1%) were down slightly from last year but were the highest since April. Exports slowed to Canada (1,016 mt, -25%), but exports were higher year-over-year to Japan (613 mt, +12%) and South Korea (468 mt, +38%). Exports were lower year-over-year to Colombia (445 mt, -39%) but were the highest since November, but exports to Chile (364 mt, -62%) dropped to the lowest level since February. Exports were higher than last year to Guatemala (334 mt, +17%) and Honduras (194 mt, +54%). Exports to Taiwan (118 mt, +71%) were higher year-over-year but were the lowest since March.

January – August pork and variety meat exports totaled 2.023 million mt, up 1.5% or +29,600 mt from last year (with value up 10% or +$492 million to $5.617 billion). Year-to-date exports were higher year-over-year to Mexico (+108,000 mt), ASEAN (+28,500 mt), Central America (+27,500 mt), Japan (+18,500 mt), South America (+16,100 mt), Caribbean + DR (+10,650 mt), Korea (+6,800 mt), and EU27 + UK (+600 mt), while exports were lower to China/HK (-164,000 mt), Taiwan (-8,500 mt), Australia/NZ (-6,600 mt), Canada (-3,700 mt), surrounding Russia region (-1,100 mt), and Africa (-420 mt).

August pork exports accounted for 24.3% of pork production and 28.3% when including variety meats as compared to 23.1% and 25.9% for July 2020. as compared to 23.1% and 25.9% for July 2020, compared to 27.3% and 30.0% for January – August 2020.

August 2021 pork export value per head averaged $59.74/head, up $12.27/head or +26% from $47.47/head in August 2020. January – August 2021 pork export value per head averaged $66.14/head, up $6.54/head or +11% from $59.59/head for January – August 2020.
