June 2021:

June pork muscle cut exports totaled 192,310 mt, down 18% from May’s large total but up 8% or +14,600 mt from last year and up 13% from 2019. June muscle cut exports were higher year-over-year to Mexico (+20,700 mt), Japan (+9,400 mt), South America (+4,400 mt), ASEAN (+4,100 mt), Korea (+3,600 mt), Central America (+2,800 mt), Australia/NZ (+2,000 mt), and the Caribbean + DR (+690 mt), but exports were lower to China/HK (-30,300 mt), Taiwan (-1,000 mt), Canada (-690 mt), and the Surrounding Russia Region (-430 mt). Exports to Mexico (61,627 mt, +51%) held at May’s level and were otherwise the highest since December, up 51% from last year and up 24% from 2019. Exports to Japan (32,946 mt, +40%) were down from May but were up 8% from June 2019. Combined exports to China/HK totaled 31,077 mt, down 45% from May and the lowest since September 2019 (but up 20% from June 2019) with exports to China (30,242 mt, -50%) also at the lowest level since September 2019 and exports to Hong Kong (835 mt, -43%) at the lowest level since February 2019. Exports to Canada (14,652 mt, -4%) slowed to the lowest level since last May. Exports to South Korea (14,186 mt, +35%) were the lowest since February but were up from last year and up 5% from June 2019. Exports to the Philippines (7,268 mt, +139%) were at record levels for the fourth month but were down from the record high of 12,472 mt in April, while exports to Vietnam (466 mt, -52%) were the lowest since December. Although exports to Colombia (5,640 mt, +111%) were higher year-over-year, they were the lowest since last September and were down 20% from 2019, and June exports to Chile (2,086 mt, +199%) were also lower than 2019 (down 52%). Exports to Australia (5,275 mt, +22%) were the lowest since last July and were down 35% from 2019, but exports to New Zealand (1,742 mt, +141%) were record high in June and were up 116% from 2019. June exports to all Central American markets were higher than 2020 and 2019 except Panama: Honduras (3,938 mt, +37%), Guatemala (1,928 mt, +87%), El Salvador (1,071 mt, +288%), Panama (967 mt, -16%), Nicaragua (766 mt, +25%), and Costa Rica (590 mt, +10%). Exports to the DR (3,317 mt, +26%) were the lowest since October, but exports remained on a record pace, and June exports were up 46% from 2019.

June pork variety meat exports totaled 46,625 mt, up 58% or +17,200 mt from last year, and up 10% from June 2019. June pork variety meat exports were higher year-over-year to China/HK (+15,100 mt), Mexico (+1,200 mt), South America (+380 mt), Central America (+290 mt), Korea (+240 mt), Canada (+130 mt), and Japan (+100 mt), while pork variety meat exports were lower to the Caribbean + DR (-160 mt), Taiwan (-110 mt), and ASEAN (-30 mt). Combined pork variety meat exports to China/HK totaled 31,592 mt, down just 7% from May and the sixth highest monthly volume on record. Exports to China (31,516 mt, +105%) were the third highest on record after May 2021 and April 2020, but exports to Hong Kong (76 mt, -93%) remained significantly lower. Exports to Mexico (8,955 mt, +16%) were the lowest since December and were down 10% from 2019.

Exports to Canada (1,401 mt, +10%) were the highest since last September but were down 26% from 2019. Exports to Chile (1,014 mt, +369%) were the highest since January and were up 24% from 2019. Exports to Korea (765 mt, +45%) were down 25% from 2019, and exports to Japan (473 mt, +25%) were down 60% from 2019. Exports to the Philippines (626 mt, -7%) slowed to the lowest level since last June, and exports were down 40% from 2019, while exports to Vietnam (251 mt, +16%) were the highest since March and were up 60% from 2019. Exports to Honduras (230 mt, +311%) were the highest since 2013, and exports to El Salvador (223 mt, +914%) were record large in June, but exports to Guatemala (208 mt, -37%) were the lowest since 2018

January – June pork and pork variety meat exports totaled 1.575 million metric ton, up 1% or +22,000 mt from last year. Exports were higher year-over-year to Mexico (+71,850 mt), ASEAN (+36,600 mt), Central America (+22,500 mt), Japan (+13,900 mt), South America (+9,800 mt), Caribbean + DR (+7,100 mt), Canada (+2,700 mt), Korea (+2,500 mt), and EU27 + UK (+330 mt), offsetting decreases to China/HK (-132,600 mt), Taiwan (5,200 mt), Australia/NZ (-4,150 mt), surrounding Russia Region (-730 mt), and Africa (-360 mt).

June pork exports accounted for 25.5% of pork production and 29.4% when including variety meats as compared to 22.2% and 24.0% for June 2020. January – June pork exports accounted for 28.1% of production and 31.4% when including variety meats, compared to 28.6% and 31.5% for January – June 2020.

June 2021 pork export value per head averaged $65.44/head, up $19.25/head or +42% from $46.19/head in June 2020. January – June 2021 pork export value per head averaged $67.04/head, up $3.43/head or +5% from $63.61/head for January – June 2020.
