January – July 2021:

July pork muscle cut exports slowed to the lowest level since September 2019 at 172,717 mt, down 9% or -17,500 mt from last year. July pork muscle cut exports were higher to Mexico (+9,050 mt), South America (+3,400 mt), Korea (+3,200 mt), Central America (+2,600 mt), Japan (+1,900 mt), Caribbean + DR (+1,400), Australia/NZ (+270 mt), and the EU27 + UK (+40 mt), while exports were lower to China/HK (-35,200 mt), Canada (-1,400 mt), ASEAN (-1,300 mt), Russia (-350 mt), and Africa (-40 mt). July pork muscle cut exports to Mexico (57,386 mt, +19%) slowed from over 61,000 mt in both May and June but remained strong and were higher year-over-year for the fifth consecutive month and were up 2% from July 2019. Exports to Japan (30,848 mt, +7%) were also up 2% from July 2019. Combined exports to China/HK totaled 19,813 mt, down 64% from last year and down 55% from 2019. Exports to China (19,072 mt, -64%) were the lowest since April 2019, and exports to Hong Kong (741 mt, -52%) were the lowest since February 2019 (and otherwise the lowest since 2006). Exports to Canada (16,790 mt, -8%) were lower than last year but were up 2% from July 2019. Exports to Korea (12,841 mt, +33%) were the lowest since last November, but exports were up 33% from last year and up 14% from 2019. Exports to Colombia (6,932 mt, +77%) maintained momentum and were up 35% from July 2019. Exports to Chile (2,338 mt, +23%) were above year-ago levels for the third month but were down 48% from July 2019 (when exports were record large). Exports to the Philippines (4,644 mt, +27%) were the lowest since January but remained elevated and were up 147% from July 2019. Exports to Vietnam were just 97 mt, down from 2,443 mt last July and the lowest since June 2018. Exports to the Dominican Republic (4,190 mt, +51%) were the highest since April and were up 97% from July 2019. Exports maintained their record pace to Central America with higher exports to: Honduras (3,267 mt, +20%), Guatemala (2,217 mt, +99%), Panama (1,266 mt, +37%), El Salvador (920 mt, +80%) and Costa Rica (647 mt, +42%). Exports to Nicaragua (382 mt, -17%) slowed to the lowest level since last September. Exports to Australia (4,071 mt, +3%) slowed to the lowest level since last July and were down 41% from July 2019. Exports to New Zealand (1,143 mt, +16%) maintained their record pace through July. Exports to Taiwan (747 mt, -54%) were the highest since December, but remained below last year’s volumes.

July pork variety meat exports totaled 49,092 mt, up 17,305 mt or +54% from last year (and up 6,834 mt from July 2019). Pork variety meat export volume was the second highest since 2017 after May 2021 (49,969 mt). July pork variety meat export value was the second highest on record after May 2021 at $117 million.
Compared to last year, exports were higher to China/HK (+16,800 mt), Mexico (+1,200 mt), Korea (+320 mt), South America (+190 mt), Japan (+150 mt), EU27 + UK (+30 mt), and Taiwan (+10 mt), while exports were lower to Canada (-666 mt), Central America (-296 mt), ASEAN (-250 mt), and the Caribbean + DR (-110 mt). July combined pork variety meat exports to China/HK totaled 33,680 mt, up 100% from last year, up 40% from 2019, and the fourth highest monthly volume on record. Exports to China (33,581 mt, +106%) were the second highest on record after May 2021 (33,720 mt), while exports to Hong Kong (99 mt, -81%) remained at the lowest level in years.

Pork variety meat exports to Mexico (9,056 mt, +15%) were above last year’s levels for the fifth month in July, but exports were down 18% from July 2019. Exports to Canada (1,494 mt, -31%) were the highest since last July, but were down 31% from last July and down 4% from July 2019. Exports to the Philippines (1,121 mt, +14%) rebounded to the highest level since April, but exports to Vietnam (72 mt, -85%) slowed to the lowest level since December. Exports to Chile (882 mt, -5%) were lower than last year and down 20% from July 2019, while exports to Colombia (389 mt, +58%) were the highest since February. Exports to Korea (812 mt, +64%) were the highest since March and were up 33% July 2019. Exports to Japan (496 mt, +41%) were above year-ago levels for the third month but were down 38% from 2019. Exports to Guatemala (245 mt, -30%) rebounded from 208 mt in June (which was the lowest monthly volume since March 2018), but exports were down 30% from last year and down 52% from July 2019.

January – July pork and variety meat exports totaled 1.797 million metric tons, up 1% or +22,000 mt from last year (with value up 8% or +$386 million to $4.984 billion). Exports were higher than last year to Mexico (+82,000 mt), ASEAN (+35,100 mt), Central America (+24,800 mt), Japan (+15,900 mt), South America (+13,300 mt), Caribbean + DR (+8,400 mt), Korea (+5,950 mt), Canada (+600 mt), and EU 27 + UK (+400 mt), while exports were lower to China/HK (-150,950 mt), Taiwan (-6,100 mt), Australia/NZ (-3,900 mt), the surrounding Russia region (-1,100 mt), and Africa (-400 mt).

July pork exports accounted for 25.2% of pork production and 30.0% when including variety meats as compared to 24.0% and 26.0% for July 2020. January – July pork exports accounted for 27.7% of production and 31.2% when including variety meats, compared to 27.9% and 30.7% for January – July 2020.

July 2021 pork export value per head averaged $67.13/head, up $18.28/head or +37% from $48.85/head in July 2020. January – July 2021 pork export value per head averaged $67.05/head, up $5.65/head or +9% from $61.40/head for January – July 2020.
