April pork muscle cut exports totaled 178,474 mt, down 3% from March but above January and February levels. April pork muscle cut exports were down 20% or -45,700 mt from last year (and down 18% from 2020 but up 1% from 2019). Exports were higher than last year to Mexico (+9,400 mt), Caribbean + DR (+4,400 mt), Japan (+1,100 mt), South America (+460 mt), and EU27 + UK (+110 mt), while exports were lower to China/HK (-39,200 mt), ASEAN (-12,200 mt), Aus/NZ (-4,500 mt), Canada (-3,050 mt), Korea (-1,400 mt), Central America (-410 mt), and Taiwan (-310 mt). April pork muscle cut exports to Mexico (66,472 mt, +16%) maintained momentum, and exports to Japan (33,717 mt, +3%) were the highest since last May. Combined exports to China/HK totaled 14,734 mt, down 73%. Exports to China (14,287 mt, -73%) were the highest since October but were down significantly from last year, and exports to Hong Kong (447 m, -65%) remained sluggish. Exports to Korea (14,400 mt, -9%) were the highest since January but were lower year-over-year. Exports to Canada (13,430 mt, -18%) were below year-ago levels for the fourth consecutive month. Exports to Colombia (9,425 mt, +38%) reached the highest level since the record volume in November (of 13,000 mt), but exports to Chile (805 mt, -72%) have been below recent year levels since late last year. Exports to the Dominican Republic (8,733 mt, +94%) were record large, and exports were also higher to the Bahamas (439 mt, +10%) and Trinidad and Tobago (333 mt, +16% and the highest since last March). Exports were higher to Honduras (4,093 mt, +17%) and Nicaragua (883 mt, +20%) but were lower to Guatemala (1,818 mt, -10%), Costa Rica (1,096 mt, -31%), Panama (998 mt, -1%), and El Salvador (908 mt, -32%). Exports to Australia (2,384 mt, -61%) were below February and March’s muted levels, and exports to New Zealand (485 mt, -59%) also remained significantly lower than last year. Exports to the Philippines (905 mt, -93%) slowed to the lowest level since December and were down sharply from last April’s record volumes (12,472 mt). Exports were also lower to Vietnam (390 mt, -50%) and Singapore (216 mt, -62%).

April pork variety meat exports totaled 34,402 mt, down 25% or -11,300 mt from last year. Compared to last year, exports were higher to Japan (+620 mt) and the Caribbean + DR (+170 mt) and edged higher to Central America (+20 mt) and Canada (+20 mt). Exports were lower to China/HK (-7,600 mt), Mexico (-3,000 mt), the ASEAN (-430 mt), South America (-400 mt), Taiwan (-340 mt), Aus/NZ (-220 mt), and Korea (-170 mt). Combined pork variety meat exports to China/HK totaled 20,712 mt, down 27% from last year. Exports were lower to China (20,671 mt, -27%), and exports to Hong Kong (41 mt, +32%) have been minimal since last year. Exports to Mexico (7,299 mt, -29%) slowed to the lowest level since May 2020.

Apart from the previous month, exports to the Philippines (1,548 mt, -15%) were the highest since October (but were lower year-over-year). Exports to Canada (1,239 mt, +1%) slowed to the lowest level since October. Exports to Japan (965 mt, +177%) have been significantly higher year-over-year since last May. Exports slowed to Korea (636 mt, -21%) after strong shipments in March. Exports were strong to Colombia (402 mt, +79%) and were also higher to Guatemala (342 mt, +10%), Honduras (208 mt, +3% and the highest since December), the Dominican Republic (233 mt, +77%) and Trinidad and Tobago (144 mt, +136% and the highest since 2020).

January – April combined pork and variety meat exports totaled 842,804 mt, down 20% or -210,000 mt from last year. Exports were higher than last year to Mexico (+63,000 mt) and the Caribbean + DR (+5,650 mt), while exports were lower to China/HK (-179,000 mt), ASEAN (-32,000 mt), Aus/NZ (-21,000 mt), Japan (-11,800 mt), South America (-11,200 mt), Canada (-10,800 mt), Central America (-5,600 mt), Korea (-4,250 mt), Taiwan (-1,600 mt), and EU27 + UK (-80 mt).

April pork exports accounted for 24.3% of pork production and 26.9% when including variety meats, the highest since December and compared to 28.6% and 32.0% for April 2021. January – April pork exports accounted for 23.0% of production and 25.8% when including variety meats, compared to 26.5% and 29.5% for January – April 2021.

April 2022 pork export value per head averaged $59.58/head, down $9.65/head or -14% from $69.23/head in April 2021. January – April 2022 pork export value per head averaged $55.48/head, down $6.87/head or -11% from $62.35/head for January – April 2021.
