September pork muscle cut exports totaled 174,000 mt, down 1% or -1,030 mt from last year. Exports were higher to Korea (+3,330 mt), Japan (+2,000 mt), Caribbean + DR (+1,270 mt), ASEAN (+1,110 mt), China/HK (+600 mt), and Taiwan (+110 mt), while exports were lower to Central America (-4,260 mt), Mexico (-2,430 mt), Canada (-1,570 mt), Aus/NZ (-1,020 mt), South America (-270 mt), and EU 27 + UK (-100 mt). Exports to Mexico (66,470 mt, -4%) fell below the year ago level for the first time this year, but year-to-date exports remain on a record pace. Exports to Korea (11,730 mt, +40%) were the lowest since October 2021, but were higher year-over-year. Exports to Japan (30,340 mt, +7%) were higher year-over-year, while exports to Canada (18,530 mt, -8%) were below year-ago levels for the ninth consecutive month, but hit the highest level since last September. Combined exports to China/HK totaled 17,920 mt, up 3% and resulting in the second highest volume this year behind last month. Exports to China (17,370 mt, +4%) were higher year-over-year, while exports to Hong Kong (560 mt, -5%) were lower. Exports to the Cayman Islands (110 mt, +227%) were the seventh highest ever recorded and exports to the Dominican Republic (5,510 mt, +32%) were higher year-over-year, while exports to the Bahamas (370 mt, -14%) and Trinidad and Tobago (180 mt, -42%) slowed, and exports to the Leeward-Windward Islands (130 mt, -16%) were at the lowest level since May 2021. Exports to Chile (750 mt, -52%) brought South America totals below year-ago levels, while Colombia (8,080 mt, +6%) and Peru (100 mt, +50%) were higher year-over-year. Exports the Philippines (2,850 mt, +51%), Singapore (210 mt, +15%), and Vietnam (180 mt, +59%) were higher year-over-year bringing the ASEAN region (3,290 mt) 51% above year-ago levels. Exports to Australia (2,590 mt, -17%) and New Zealand (240 mt, -67%) were below year ago levels for the ninth consecutive month. Exports to Taiwan (220 mt, +106%) were higher year-over-year, while exports to EU 27 + UK (10 mt, -88%) were lower year-over-year. Exports were higher than last year to El Salvador (820 mt, +23%) and Costa Rica (930 mt, +47%), but were lower to other destinations in Central America: Honduras (2,000 mt, -53%), Guatemala (1,360 mt, -55%), Panama (740 mt, -29%), and Nicaragua (510 mt, -51%).

September pork variety meat exports totaled 48,200 mt, +8% or +3,540 mt from last year and the second highest level this year. Exports were higher to China/HK (+4,690 mt), Korea (+550 mt), Central America (+230 mt), Canada (+100 mt), Caribbean + DR (+100 mt), and Taiwan (+60 mt), while exports were lower to Mexico (-1,170 mt), South America (-310 mt), ASEAN (-220 mt), and Japan (-90 mt). Exports to China (33,100 mt, +17%) were the fourth highest on record, while exports were lower to Hong Kong (20 mt, -76%).

Exports to Mexico were lower year-over-year, while exports were higher to Korea (550 mt, +42%). Exports to Honduras (260 mt, +59%) were the second highest ever recorded, while exports were also higher to Guatemala (360 mt, +61%), Colombia (550 mt, +69%), and the Dominican Republic (100 mt, up from 2 mt). Exports to the Philippines (1,070 mt, +12%) and Taiwan (70 mt, +1,220%) were higher year-over-year. Exports to Japan (670 mt, -12%) were the lowest since December 2021.

January – September pork muscle cut and variety meat exports totaled 1.943 million mt, down 13% or 299,210 mt from last year. Exports were higher to Mexico (+73,570 mt), the Caribbean + DR (+17,160 mt), and Korea (+4,500 mt), while exports were lower to China/HK (-245,250 mt), ASEAN (-39,850 mt), Aus/NZ (-30,060 mt), Japan (-24,690 mt), Canada (-21,990 mt), Central America (-16,850 mt), South America (-12,760 mt), Taiwan (-1,830 mt), and EU 27 + UK (-890 mt).

September pork exports accounted for 23.1% of pork production and 27.3% when including variety meats, compared to 23.1% and 26.9% for September 2021. January – September pork exports accounted for 23.4% of production and 26.9% when including variety meats, compared to 26.4% and 30.0% for January – September 2021.

September 2022 pork export value per head averaged $62.37/head, up $5.84/head or +10% from $56.53/head in September 2021. January – September 2022 pork export value per head averaged $59.74/head, down $4.72/head or -7% from $64.46/head for January – September.
