The first module of the veterinary school for pig farm specialists implemented by the Association of Ukrainian Pig Breeders (AUPB) with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) finished yesterday.

The first module of the training covered the topics:

  • herd vaccination protocol development;
  • acclimation practices of breeding stock;
  • breeding stock management, and
  • on-farm laboratory monitoring program.

Dr. Justin Brown, Assistant Teaching Professor, Vet Diagnostic & Production Animal Medicine, ISU focused on the criteria for choosing vaccines for pig farms, the benefits of a booster dose, the timing of vaccination depending on the target group of pigs, the specifics of using autogenous vaccines, the approach to calculating the number of samples, etc. Another presentation was devoted to approaches to acclimation of newly acquired young pigs to the most common pathogens, in particular the practice of feedback.

Dr. Olexandr Baban, Assistant Teaching Professor, Department of Obstetrics and Biotechnology of Animal Reproduction gave practical advice on achieving maximum fertility and diagnosing reproductive disorders that may hinder it.

Dr. Dmitry Masiuk, Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, Professor, Director of Research Center for Biosafety and Environmental Control at Dniprо State Agrarian and Economic University shared the principles of designing and implementing integrative monitoring studies and examples of their implementation on pig farms.

To assess their knowledge, the participants took a test, the results of which were commented on by the invited speakers, explaining the proposed answers.

The training of veterinary medicine specialists of pig farms is carried out within the framework of the project "Ensuring Animal Health in Ukraine", which is implemented by the Association of Ukrainian Pig Breeders together with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). The program of the veterinary school consists of five modules, each of which contains four presentations on related topics. Teaching materials are prepared by leading domestic and foreign experts. Participants who pass the full course of training will receive certificates.
