The number of pigs in Ukraine decreased by 1% per year

The number of pigs in Ukraine has decreased over the year by 1% or 60 thousand animals, the Association of Pig Breeders of Ukraine reported with reference to the State Statistics Service of the country.

The number of pigs in Ukraine decreased by 1% per year

"It is specified that the number of pigs in Ukraine at the beginning of September was 6 million 100 thousand heads. It is noted that if the number of pigs in agricultural enterprises increases, then in private farms there is a decrease in livestock.

At the same time, the growth of the industrial pig population is slowing down. So, if in the first half of 2021 the increase in the number of pigs at agricultural enterprises was 9-11.6% compared to 2020, then since July this figure has decreased to 4.6%.

The slower growth in the number of pigs in pig farms does not compensate for the decrease in the number of pigs in the household sector. Private farms "lost" in comparison with last year 8.5% of pigs - 224 thousand heads.

Experts are of the opinion that the situation with the pig population in Ukraine will not change soon. “The difficult economic circumstances, in which domestic pig farms have been operating for almost a year, do not encourage further increase in livestock,” conclude the analysts of the Association of Pig Breeders of Ukraine.
