Pork imports to Russia fell to minimum values

In the first half of 2020, the import of pork from non-CIS countries to the Russian Federation decreased by 98%, to 1,000 tons. Meanwhile, Russia imported up to 100 thousand tons of the product annually, the Kommersant newspaper notes.

Pork imports to Russia fell to minimum values

According to the Center for Industry Expertise of the Russian Agricultural Bank, in monetary terms, the volume of supplies decreased to $ 3 million (from $ 170 million). The increased attractiveness of the markets of the PRC and the countries of Southeast Asia for world exporters led to the minimum values. Not the least role was played by changes in the tariff policy of the Russian Federation: previously, pork imports were regulated by a quota (400 thousand tons last year), and from January 1, 2020, a duty of 25% applies to the import of this type of meat.

It is predicted that by the end of the current year, pork supplies to the Russian Federation will reach 10 thousand tons, imports will not exceed 1% of the pork consumption volume, which experts estimate in 2020 at 4.1 million tons.

The absence of foreign pork on the market will help to avoid a sharp collapse in retail prices for such meat, which can still fall by 3-4% this year.
