The death of pigs after ASF vaccination in Vietnam happened due to lack of proper control

In September 2022, satisfactory results of ASF vaccination and demands to continue strict control of vaccination were published among the news about agriculture in Vietnam.

An investigation into the deaths of ASF-vaccinated pigs in three provinces of Vietnam found uncontrolled vaccination processes that did not comply with the instructions of the Department of Veterinary Medicine of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Vietnam.

The pigs were vaccinated at the wrong doses and at the wrong age. The death of pigs after vaccination may have occurred in connection with the supply and sale of the vaccine directly to veterinarians and farmers for self-vaccination.

ASF vaccine deaths caused by uncontrolled vaccination processes

Following an ASF vaccine trial conducted by the Department of Veterinary Medicine of the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development on two farms with 258 pigs in September, officials said 20 localities have now rolled out vaccinations with a total of more than 21,000 doses per in accordance with all relevant Swine Health Information Center guidelines.

On one of the farms where the ASF vaccine was administered in two phases, a few pigs had a mild fever, but all animals were in a stable condition at the time of the farm visit.

As a result of positive test results in Vinh Phuc province, ministry officials intend to scale up ASF vaccination soon. Their plans include increasing vaccine volumes to 600,000 doses. Vaccination will take place under the strict control of the vaccination process in accordance with the instructions of the Department of Veterinary Medicine. Supervision to evaluate of vaccine efficacy will continue.
