Global pork production to exceed chicken production this year – USDA

According to preliminary estimates of the USDA for 2020, of the total volume of three types of meat produced worldwide, which is just over 258 million tons, chicken accounted for about 39% of the total, pork – 38% and beef – 23%.

However, as the demand for pork in Asia is growing due to the ASF crisis, in 2021 the production and consumption of pork, according to the department, will exceed the corresponding indicators of poultry farming.

УIncreases are expected in Brazil (3%), China, where herd recovery is underway, and the United States, which hopes to capitalize on pork demand in Asia.

We add that this trend can be enhanced by significant losses of poultry farms in Asia and Europe due to the forced slaughter of livestock in the outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza. They also predict that this phenomenon in the market will be temporary. The general trends are different. Before the outbreak of African swine fever, USDA data show that less pork was produced in the world than chicken meat.

So, from 2011 to 2017, the production of chicken meat increased by 19%, and pork – by less than 9%.
