Thanksgiving in the US, ASF in Asia and strong demand in the EU influence global pork prices

This autumn, pork in many countries of the world is much more expensive than last.

In particular, due to strong demand coupled with limited supply, pork prices in EU countries are noticeably higher than a year earlier. In the first half of October, the average price for half carcasses in the EU was €2.09/kg, which is 54% higher than in autumn 2021.

Thanksgiving in the US, ASF in Asia and strong demand in the EU influence global pork prices

In the US, pork prices have been gradually declining since August. However, in October they expect a reduction in slaughter of pigs by 1.5% and the traditional rise in the price of turkey meat on the eve of Thanksgiving. These factors, analysts believe, should moderate the fall in pork prices and support them in the future.

Despite the fact that the lowest recorded price per kilogram of pork in the US this fall is $ 1.85 - this is 22% higher than the same period in 2021.

A slight decrease in pig slaughter in October is also observed in Canada (-1.6%). Since the second decade, operators there have noted positive price fluctuations: at the beginning of the month, the average purchase price fell below $1.5/kg of slaughter weight, and two weeks later it reached this mark again.
