December pork muscle cut exports totaled 190,662 mt, up 5.5% or +9,873 mt from last year. Exports were higher to China/HK (+7,100 mt), Mexico (+6,960 mt), Caribbean + DR (+3,920 mt), Aus/NZ (+800 mt), the ASEAN (+630 mt), Central America (+350 mt), and Taiwan (+250 mt), while exports were lower to Japan (-7,410 mt), South America (-1,970 mt), Canada (-400 mt), Korea (-360 mt), and EU27 + UK (-40 mt). Exports to Mexico (78,400 mt, +53%) were the second highest on record after January 2022. Exports to South America (8,190 mt, -19%) were lower year-over-year. Exports to Panama (5,330 mt, -20%) were lower year-over-year, but were the second highest on record after December 2021 and exports to Honduras (4,910 mt, +36% and fourth highest on record), Guatemala (1,740 mt, +24%), and El Salvador (1,060 mt, +30%) were higher year-over-year, bringing Central America (14,600 mt, +2%) to the highest level on record. Exports to the Caribbean + DR (10,440 mt, +60%) were the second highest on record after November 2022 led by the Dominican Republic (8,990 mt, +78% and the second highest on record), the Leeward-Windward Islands (370 mt, +7%), and the Netherlands Antilles (220 mt, +42.5%). Exports slowed slightly to Canada (15,750 mt, -2.5%) from year-ago levels. Combined exports to China/HK totaled 20,520 mt, up 53%, with exports to both China (20,020 mt, +54%) and Hong Kong (500 mt, +22%) higher year-over-year. Exports to Japan (23,960 mt, -24%) were the lowest level since June 2020, and exports to Korea (13,580 mt, -3%) were also lower than year-ago levels. Exports to the Philippines (1,400 mt, +61%) and Vietnam (120 mt, up from 10 mt) were higher year-over-year, bringing the ASEAN region (1,710 mt) 58% above year-ago levels in December. Exports to Taiwan (440 mt, +138%) were higher year-over-year and were the second highest this year. Exports to Australia (2,590 mt, +63%) were higher than year-ago levels, while exports to New Zealand (180 mt, -53%) were below year-ago levels. Exports to the EU27 + UK (70 mt, -34%) were below year-ago levels for the 8th consecutive month.

December pork variety meat exports totaled 54,056 mt, +54% or 18,973 mt from last year and the third highest level ever recorded. Exports were higher to China/HK (+15,270 mt), Mexico (+3,230 mt), Caribbean + DR (+200 mt), the ASEAN (+530 mt), Korea (+80 mt), and Taiwan (+80 mt), while exports were lower to Canada (-570 mt), Central America (-160 mt), South America (-140 mt), and Japan (-10 mt).

Exports to China (35,710 mt, +75%) were the second highest on record behind October 2022, while there were no recorded exports to Hong Kong in December. Exports to the Philippines (1,820 mt, +33.5%) were the highest since April 2021. Exports to Korea (830 mt, +10%) and Taiwan (120 mt, +183%) were higher year-over-year, while exports to Japan (610 mt, -1%) were slightly lower than year-ago levels. Exports to Mexico (11,770 mt, +38%) were the highest since August 2021, while exports to Canada (960 mt, -37%) were lower year-over-year. Exports to the Dominican Republic (480 mt, +124% and the highest since January) and Colombia (410 mt, +51%) were above year-ago levels, while exports to Chile (50 mt, -80%) were below year-ago levels all of 2022. Exports to El Salvador (110 mt, +62%) were higher year-over-year, while exports to Guatemala (260 mt, -17%) and Honduras (50 mt, -78% and the lowest since July 2020) were below year-ago levels, bringing Central America to the lowest level this year.

December pork exports accounted for 25.6% of pork production and 30.5% when including variety meats, compared to 22.5% and 25.0% for December 2021. January – December pork exports accounted for 23.7% of production and 27.5% when including variety meats, compared to 26.0% and 29.4% for January – December 2021.

December 2022 pork export value per head averaged $66.74/head, up $12.09/head or +22% from $54.65/head in December 2021. January – December 2022 pork export value per head averaged $61.26/head, down $1.60/head or -2.5% from $62.86/head for January – December 2021.
