Russian pork consumption has grown

Pork is the only type of meat the consumption of which is increasing. The Russians refused to eat beef because of the high cost, and the restrictions of the Rosselkhoznadzor negatively affected the mutton. Kommersant writes about this, referring to a study by the National Union of Pig Breeders (NSS).

The study informs that in January-September of all types of meat, Russians increased their consumption of only pork. According to him, the consumption of pork increased by 5%, to 2.92 million tons, while the consumption of lamb decreased by 3.8%, to 98.9 thousand tons, beef - by 2.1%, to 1.16 million tons , poultry meat - by 1.4. %, to 3.6 million tons, other types of meat - by 2.3%, to 35.7 thousand tons.

Russian pork consumption has grown

Experts attribute this trend to a significant increase in pork production compared to other meats, as well as a warm fall, which extended the barbecue season. In nine months, pig producers produced 3.05 million tons of meat, which is 10% more than in the same period last year. The growth of poultry meat production over the same period is estimated by 0.8% to 3.67 million tons, beef - by 0.2% to 984.1 thousand tons. Lamb and other types of meat decreased by 6.2% and 0.9%, respectively. The increase in production allowed pig breeders to reduce the wholesale price by 4-5%, says Yuri Kovalev, Director General of the NSS.

He also notes that in the end, in nine months, Russian pig breeders managed to almost completely replace imports. If in January-September 2019 76.8 thousand tons of pork were imported to the Russian Federation, then for the same period in 2020 - only 8.95 thousand tons.

Manufacturers' estimates are confirmed by retail chains. In the O'Key chain, pork sales increased by almost 15%, in Magnit, pork also outstripped competitors, sales jumped 17% in eight months.

According to experts, initially, beef is a more expensive type of meat, so some consumers, in the face of declining incomes, preferred cheaper protein to it.
